About
Have you ever loaded a webpage only for it to be in the wrong language? Or maybe your streaming services gave you content from another country? Many of these online services use IP geolocation to determine where users, like you, are located to deliver the right content from the right servers.
Given the ever growing complexity of the network, this project aims to measure how well today’s IP geolocation methods perform in the modern Internet. Our hope is to use these findings to design methods for delivering content with greater accuracy and lower latency.
This is a project from Carnegie Mellon University. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at isabel AT cmu.edu.

This data will be used solely for research purposes to measure and improve the accuracy of geolocation services. This data will be stored on AWS servers that will be accessible by select members of the research team at CMU. Any data that will be publicly reported will be anonymized or presented in aggregate. Your participation is completely voluntary and you will not be compensated for participation in this study. If you do not want to participate, you may decline participation by closing this application. Once you give consent, you will be prompted to run our geolocation script and answer a few questions. This data collection process will only happen once. We expect this process to take less than 1 minute. If you would like to participate in this study multiple times, you may reload this webpage and will be prompted for your consent each time it is reloaded. If you have any questions, please email isabel AT cmu.edu.
By accepting, you are confirming that you are at least 18 years of age and acknowledge that you understand how your data will be used and consent to its collection and use for this research study.
What is a VPN?
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure connection between your device and another network by "tunneling" your traffic through a remote server. This can make your device appear as if it is located somewhere else.
